We're now seeing more crossplay games than ever before, as more and more developers open up their online games so that those who play them can play with their friends, even if they're not all using the same system. In the current generation, cross-platform play is becoming more and more important as players are increasingly pushing back on having to consider what platform their friends are playing on before picking up new hardware - especially given that many still can't get their hands on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X console.įortunately, a lot of developers and publishers have noticed the shift - which has perhaps been made easier by the similar processing architecture that recent PlayStation and Xbox consoles have shared. If your friends were all playing online together on Xbox One, you may not have wanted to pick up a PS4 if it meant you couldn't play with them.
In previous console generations, whether you picked up a PlayStation, Xbox or PC may have been largely influenced by what hardware your friends had. So, for example, if you're playing Call of Duty: Warzone on PS5, you can still play with friends on PS4, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.
So what exactly are crossplay games? Crossplay games allow for cross-platform play, in other words, they allow you to play online multiplayer with friends on platforms different to the one you're using.
